Return to Dublin

WASHINGTON D.C.

21st October 2011 Early Evening, 6.00pm (local time)

Arrived after a delayed journey due to the late arrival of the incoming train. So, it’s not only in Ireland that it happens.

Staying in the Capitol Hilton, very posh indeed!

Some have gone for a short walking tour with our guide Paul Schneiderman, a history buff. Very interesting to talk to though. Knows all about the French and English monarchies, not my favourite subject as most of you will know. Parasites!

Meeting Dick de Freyre a local set dance teacher for dinner. I’d hoped his wife Dixie would also be there, but a previous commitment keeps her away. Both Dick and Dixie were very kind to Anne and myself when we came over the the US in 2001 for my son’s graduation from the Louisiana University he attended for 5 years.

Washington is a beautiful city very elegant. More from here tomorrow!

Washington 22nd October 2011:

Just back from an early morning walk in this very elegant city. Walked up to the White House and the squares surrounding it.

Washington DC

Jerry and Wild Life

The squares are infested with grey squirrels who are not in the least intimidated by humans.
One of the squares, MacPherson Square is the site of the protest against corporate greed. I’ve taken a few pics which will be up as soon as Sam, the webmaster, works his magic on them. [Done - Sam]

Jerry among Protestors - in his element

They’re just “ordinary people” who are appalled at the fact that the authors of this world wide recessional problem are not being taken to book.
Another two people protesting directly outside the White House. one against carbon emissions and the other looking for justice for her son who was killed unlawfully by police. Just sitting there and the tourists walking around them.

One of the ‘official’ tours is starting at 9.00am in 15 minutes, so I’d better finish and promise to talk later!

Anti Iran Protest & Down with Dictators

Terry Keane and a very nice young singer called Steve, whose surname escapes me, drove from near Philadelphia to meet up and to sing and talk about songs. Their enthusiasm astounds me.
It took them over four hours to get here due to traffic and they left after 10.00pm to drive back. Superb commitment!
I’ve sent some of the sound files to put up. A few clips would be nice, to give you a flavour of the few hours we spent together.

Washington 23rd October 2011 (am)

On the way to breakfast after an interrupted night’s sleep to watch the World Rugby Cup Final. The match was on here at 4.00am! Not able to get it on any of the tv channels over here. As far as the US is concerned it might not have happened.

They’re too busy looking at the baseball ‘world series’ and the various college American football games. An insular society!
