NEW YORK CITY

October 20th : Early morning! 1.55am (local time)

Flight to New York

Well I’ve got here after a very long day.

The flight from Dublin to London was uneventful, but Heathrow Airport is a nightmare to negotiate.

Got the flight to New York, which was really nice, with very pleasant cabin crew. JFK Airport was another nightmare. We had to stand in line for over an hour to clear immigration.

Several flights arrived together and there were only 5 staff to process them. Then, the bags of one of the tour group had gone missing which meant we had to hang around in the arrivals hall for another hour while her problem was sorted.

I’m writing this at 1.55am local time which means I’ve been on the go for almost 24 hours and am exhausted.

Just looking at NYC on the way in from the airport it seems to be an amazing city.

More about this later!

Singing for the students on the ethnomusicology course, New York University

Thursday 20th October New York City

Well I did the thing with Dan Milner at NYU and it went very well. Nice attentive students who were well prepared for my visit. Dan had given them all the web address of my website and they all knew exactly who I was and what I was about.
They seemed to really enjoy the songs and me talking about my influences including Frank Harte.

After that it was off to McSorley’s for a beer and then to Swifts for a sandwich. Both very nice!
Managed to see all of Little Italy and Chinatown, buy a digital sound recorder and get to the South Street Seaport Museum and to see a four masted sailing ship, The Peking, a fantastic piece of engineering.
Up bright and early in the morning for our departure to Washington. More from there tomorrow!

Up bright and early to finish my packing for my ‘trip of a lifetime’.

Dan Milner from New York has already been on and will call to bring me to NYU and show me around Manhattan. Stan Scott and Dora, are coming into Grand Central Station from Connecticut to have dinner with me on Thursday evening.

Dan is a superb singer with a long history to him. His mother is from Brosna Co. Kerry and like my own mother worked in the midlands of England during the Second World War. His seminal collection of songs, ‘The Bonny Bunch of Roses’ has been required reading for anyone interested in how songs travel across the Atlantic.

Stan and Dora are great ethnomusicologists who published their great book "Music in Ireland" experiencing music, expressing culture in 2004. They have a deep understanding of ethnic music and singing. Stan is a brilliant singer in his own right and was a great friend of my late brother-in-law Tom Munnelly Ireland’s greatest folksong collector in the English language. More to come!!
